It may seem like a product that has become fashionable lately, but the truth is that makeup primer , also called makeup base , has existed for a long time, and its use was reserved for professionals.

Moisturizer or primer?

This is the question makeup artists always face. But the truth is, you should never skip your regular moisturizing routine . Primer doesn't replace moisturizer, and it's essential to have well-hydrated and prepped skin before applying makeup.

The main function of a makeup primer is to correct skin tone , soften fine lines , minimize the appearance of pores , add radiance , prevent shine , etc. But we mustn't forget that this is an immediate effect and doesn't last, since removing makeup also removes the primer.

Therefore, we should never replace the use of a moisturizer with a makeup primer. We should first apply our usual skincare product (moisturizer, anti-aging cream, etc.) and, once it's absorbed, proceed with makeup, applying a primer if desired.

Types of makeup primers

There are countless different primers and makeup bases, with varying textures (fluid, cream, gel, etc.), shades, properties, and benefits. But these are the most common:

• Mattifying primers : These effectively mattify the skin, preventing shine , especially throughout the day. They help makeup last much longer and are perfect for oily skin.
• Anti-pore primers: with a different function than mattifying primers (although sometimes you can find primers with both benefits), these only reduce the visible appearance of pores. They also help fill in fine lines. They work very well on the T-zone : forehead, nose, and chin.
• Smoothing/perfecting primers: These primers leave the skin completely smooth, conceal imperfections , blemishes , or scars , and their main component is silicone. This helps foundation glide on much better and settle evenly.
• Colored primers: These types of primers help correct skin discoloration in larger areas, making them a better choice than concealer. They come in various shades depending on the area you wish to correct.
  • Green : these are the best known for reducing redness , couperose, rosacea or red pimples.
  • Yellow : perfect for neutralizing very dark skin or skin with sunspots .
  • Violet : These are mainly used for dull or oriental skin tones , as they add luminosity and even out the tone of olive or tired skin.
  • Pink : very similar to violet, it's used to give a healthy , radiant, and dewy complexion. It can be used on all skin tones.
  • White : This is the universal color for unifying skin tone, as it lightens the original complexion and allows the foundation to have the same color all over the face. Light beige also works just as well.
